The mercury’s rising here in California, where days are expected to hit 100 degrees by Wednesday. Here are five tips to help keep your cool:
Top Tips to Stay Cool
Stay hydrated. Drink water, and lots of it, even if you are not thirsty. If you’re exercising or working hard, replace fluids even more often. You can also add a little electrolyte powder to your water — there’s no need to buy those sugary things on the market such as Gatorade or Powerade if you’re on a budget just make sure you get plenty of H2O
Do not over-cool your home and risk losing power. Air-conditioning units should be shut off/set to higher temp during the day when no one at home to enjoy them, and if you can’t live without them overnight. Set up fans to blow air around the room instead of directly at you.
Wear lighter, breathable fabrics. Cotton is better than synthetic blends or synthetics themselves, and it’s always better to have lighter color fabrics rather than darker ones.
Watch your pets carefully. Dogs are more vulnerable than cats because their fur can’t wick away moisture from their skin. Give them plenty of room to move around, while keeping them cool and shaded as much as you can.
Keep an eye on your elderly neighbors. They are more prone to heat-related illnesses and may miss the TV or internet heat warnings. Help them by checking in or having someone do it for you.
Anyone who thinks they might be suffering from a heat-related illness should immediately seek medical attention. If your home is not providing enough heat protection please reach out to one of the Cooling Centers in San Bernardino County for additional relief.
