Tips for Safe Trick-or-Treating

We are not paranoid “there’s razors in the apples” parents here, but we do believe in protecting our kids big or small. We always go with our kids to trick-or-treat, especially when the fall wheather is so nice. If yours go alone, or with friends, remind them to stay in well-lit areas, respect traffic rules, and use crosswalks. Here are some additional guidelines for safe trick-or-treating in the IE.

Safety Tips for Children:

  • Costume Safety: Ensure that costumes are bright and reflective, or add reflective tape to increase visibility. Masks can obstruct a child’s vision, so consider using non-toxic face paint instead.
  • Supervised Trick-or-Treating: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult. Encourage older children to trick-or-treat in groups and plan a safe route.
  • Candy Checking: Remind children not to eat any treats until they bring them home. Discard any opened or suspicious-looking treats. Even without tampering something open can have bacteria or be expired–plus you get the parent inspection first pick!

Teenagers & Halloween: Embracing the Fun

Encourage our teenagers to partake in the Halloween festivities by fostering an inclusive and judgment-free community. Their are worse things they could be doing than raiding your candy stash. Local events and gatherings specifically tailored for teens can also help them celebrate safely within the community.

Safety Tips for Teenagers:

  • Respect Curfews: Many local communities establish curfew hours for trick-or-treating; make sure your teens are aware and plan accordingly.
  • Stay in Groups: Encourage teens to stay in groups and remain in well-lit areas. Remind them to be mindful of traffic and use crosswalks.
  • Respect Property: Encourage respectful behavior. Vandalism and pranks can ruin the fun for everyone and lead to legal trouble.
